Passive Voice and Exercises


1.       Simple Present Tense
       Active                                              Passive
Susan writes this story ----------à This story is written by Susan.
Susan writes some stories. -----à Some stories are written by Susan.
Subject + Verb1 + Object             ------à Object + is/am/are + verb 3 +( by Subject)

2.       Present Continuous Tense
Susan is writing this story -----------à This story is being written by Susan.
Susan is writing these stories. -----à

3.       Present Perfect Tense
Susan has written this story ---------à This story has been written by Susan.
Susan has written these stories -----à

4.       Simple Past Tense
Susan wrote this story ----------------à
Susan wrote these stories. -----------à
5.       Past Continuous Tense
Susan was writing this story. ----------à
Susan was writing these stories. --------à

6.       Past Perfect Tense
Susan had written this story -----------à
Susan had written these stories. ------à

7.       Simple Future Tense
Susan will write this story. --------------à
Susan will write these stories. ----------à

8.       Future with be going to

Exercises:
Change these sentences into passive voice! 
1.      Every day, Sandra eats an apple. -à Every day, an apple is eaten by Sandra.
Sandra eats two apples every day-à

2.      Now, Sandra is eating an apple. à
Sandra is eating two apples now. àTwo apples are being eaten by Sandra now.

3.      This morning, Sandra has eaten an apple. à
Sandra has eaten two apples, this morning. à

4.      Yesterday, Sandra ate an apple. à
Sandra ate two apples, yesterday. à

5.      When I met her, Sandra was eating an apple. à
Sandra was eating two apples when I met her. à

6.      Before you came, Sandra had eaten an apple. à
Sandra had eaten two apples before you came. à

7.      After taking a bath, Sandra will eat an apple. à
Sandra will eat two apples after taking a bath. à

8.      Sandra is going to eat an apple for breakfast. à
Sandra is going to eat two apples for breakfast à

9.      By this time tomorrow, Sandra will have eaten an apple. à
Sandra will have eaten two apples by this time tomorrow. àTwo apples will have been                                 eaten by Sandra by this time tomorrow.

Underline the subject, verb and object and then change these sentences into Passive! Remember that the adverb usually was put at the beginning or the end of the sentence.
Example:
An old woman usually washes our clothes every day.
Our clothes are washed by an old woman every day.

1.       He buys the novels in the bookstore.
2.       My friend is designing my new house.
3.       Someone has kidnapped a boy from school.
4.       Last night, some thieves stole three valuable paintings from my gallery.
5.       I saw the cat was eating a big mouse.
6.       A dentist had examined the children.
7.       They will invite you to the flag ceremony next week.
8.       We are going to take mother to the hospital.

9.       My brother will have sold the car by this time tomorrow.
